Chicago Hardy Fig Tree is a cold hardy, self-fertile fig that ripens sweet, strawberry-fleshed fruit in zones 5 to 10. It arrives as a live, well-rooted plant in a 1-gallon pot.

Description

Scientific name: Ficus carica 'Chicago Hardy'

The fig that fruits even where winters are hard. Chicago Hardy can freeze to the ground in zones 5–6 and still regrow and ripen figs the same summer — and in zones 7–10 it’s a big, reliable producer of sweet, strawberry-fleshed fruit. You get a live, well-rooted plant in a 1-gallon pot, shipped in its pot so the roots arrive undisturbed. 1-gallon pot, live plant · Self-fertile: one tree is enough.

You receive a live, well-rooted plant in a 1-gallon pot, shipped in its pot so the roots arrive undisturbed. Depending on the season it may arrive leafed out or dormant; both are normal and healthy. Plant it in the ground in zones 7 and up, or grow it in a large container anywhere and overwinter the pot in a garage or basement in colder zones.

Planting & Care

Watering: Water the pot thoroughly before transplanting. At planting, water in with 1–2 gallons to settle the soil. First week: check daily and water whenever the top inch of soil feels dry — usually every 2–3 days, about ½–1 gallon per session. First month: deep-water twice a week (1–2 gallons each time) if rain is scarce. First season: one deep watering per week in dry weather, roughly 3–5 gallons, letting the soil dry slightly between waterings — figs resent constantly soggy roots. Established in-ground trees are fairly drought tolerant but size up fruit much better with a deep soak of 5–10 gallons every 1–2 weeks during summer dry spells. Container figs dry out fast: in summer heat, water whenever the top 1–2 inches of mix are dry, which can mean daily.
Sun & soil: Full sun is non-negotiable for ripe, sweet fruit. Figs are adaptable to most soils as long as drainage is good; heavy wet clay invites root rot, so plant on a slight mound in clay soils. A spot against a south- or west-facing wall adds warmth and winter protection in cold zones.
Feeding: Light hand with fertilizer. One balanced application (such as 10-10-10 or an organic equivalent, per label) in early spring is enough. Excess nitrogen produces lush leaves, few figs, and soft growth that winter kills more easily.
Pruning & winter notes: Prune in late winter only to remove dead or crossing wood and to shape. In zones 5–6, mulch the root zone heavily after the ground cools, or wrap the plant / roll the pot into an unheated garage. Cut back winter-killed wood to live tissue in spring.

Pollination Info
