Pakistan mulberry grows the longest berries of any mulberry — routinely 3 to 4½ inches, deep purple, and so sweet and mild they are often described as raspberry-flavored. It ships as a live plant in a 1-gallon pot and thrives in the heat of zones 7–10.

Description

Scientific name: Morus macroura 'Pakistan'

Pakistan mulberry does not do anything by halves — including fruit size. Its berries are the longest of any mulberry, routinely 3 to 4½ inches, deep purple, and so sweet and mild they are often described as raspberry-flavored, with almost no tartness. The fruit ripens over a long window in late spring and early summer rather than all at once, and because the juice is less staining than black mulberries, picking and eating them is a cleaner business (though the birds will still race you for them). The tree grows fast into a large, handsome shade tree and thrives in the heat that warm-zone gardeners have in abundance.

You receive a live plant in a 1-gallon pot, shipped in its pot with roots undisturbed. Pakistan is the mulberry for zones 7–10: it loves a long, hot summer and can fruit within a year or two of planting. Young trees are tender in hard freezes at the zone 7 edge, so northern growers there should plant in spring, mulch well, and protect the first winter or two. Give this tree real space and a spot where falling fruit lands on lawn or mulch, not on pavement you care about.

Planting & Care

Watering: Water the pot thoroughly before transplanting and water in with 1–2 gallons. First week: water every 2–3 days, about 1 gallon per session, keeping the root zone evenly moist. First month: deep-water twice a week (2–3 gallons each time) if rain is short. First season: one deep weekly watering of about 5 gallons during dry spells — fast top growth requires a root system to match. Established trees are drought tolerant in warm zones, but fruit size and the length of the harvest improve with a deep soak of 10 gallons or more every 2–3 weeks during summer drought. Avoid constantly wet soil; drainage matters more than volume.

Sun & soil: Full sun and heat are what this tree wants most; production falls off in shade. Adaptable to most soils with decent drainage, including the alkaline-leaning soils of the Southwest that many fruit trees dislike. Site away from patios and drives — ripe fruit drops.

Feeding: Feed sparingly. A light balanced application in early spring on poor soils, or simply a compost mulch, is plenty. Heavy nitrogen gives leaves, not mulberries.

Pruning & winter notes: Prune during mid-winter dormancy only, to shape and manage size; spring pruning causes heavy sap bleeding. At the zone 7 edge, mulch the root zone thickly and wrap young trunks before hard freezes — once the trunk has caliper and bark, hardiness improves noticeably.

FAQs

How long are the berries, really?
Usually 3 to 4.5 inches — the longest of any mulberry — deep purple and very sweet, with almost no tartness.

I am in zone 7. Can I grow it?
Yes, with care: plant in spring, mulch well, and protect the young tree for the first winter or two. It loves a long, hot summer.

Is it messy?
Its juice stains less than black mulberries, but fruit still drops — plant it over lawn or mulch, not over pavement.
