Do You Need Two Blueberry Bushes? Pollination, First Fruit and Which to Buy

Quick answer

No, you don't need two blueberry bushes to get fruit. Highbush blueberries, including Bluecrop, Chandler, Pink Lemonade and Sunshine Blue, are self-fertile. But planting two or more varieties that bloom at the same time usually gives bigger crops and larger berries, because bees carry pollen between them.

Which blueberries to plant together, by zone

Your situation What to plant Why
Zones 4 to 7, room for two or more Bluecrop + Chandler Reliable heavy crops plus very large berries over a long harvest
Zones 4 to 8, want something different Pink Lemonade Pink berries, spring flowers and red fall color; self-fertile
Warm zones (low chill) or a patio pot Sunshine Blue Needs only about 150 chill hours, stays 3 to 4 ft, fruits well on its own

Shipping note: Bluecrop, Chandler and Sunshine Blue do not ship to AK, AZ, CA, HI, ID, MT, NV, OR, UT or WA. Pink Lemonade does not ship to AK or HI.

Will a single blueberry bush produce berries?

Yes. A single healthy highbush plant in full sun and acidic soil will fruit. Cross-pollination is a bonus, not a requirement: more of the flowers set fruit and the berries tend to be larger.

When will my blueberries start producing?

Be patient for two seasons. Iowa State University Extension advises not letting blueberries fruit in their first 2 years: rub off the blossoms so the plant puts its energy into roots and shoots. Expect a light crop from year 3 and full production around year 5 or 6.

How far apart should I plant them?

Plant bushes about 4 to 6 ft apart in the same bed, so bees move easily between them. In pots, simply group the containers together.

What every blueberry needs

  • Acidic soil: pH about 4.5 to 5.5. In alkaline soil, grow them in pots of acidic (ericaceous) mix or a raised bed.
  • Full sun: at least 6 to 8 hours a day.
  • Steady moisture: shallow roots dry out fast; mulch with pine bark or pine straw.
  • The right chill: northern highbush (Bluecrop, Chandler) need about 800 to 1,000 chill hours; Sunshine Blue needs about 150.

Frequently asked questions

Do blueberries have male and female plants?

No. Each blueberry flower has both male and female parts, so every plant can produce berries.

Do blueberry bushes need to be planted in pairs?

Highbush blueberries don't need a pair, but two varieties that bloom together usually produce more and larger berries. Rabbiteye blueberries, which we don't sell, do need two varieties.

Will a blueberry bush produce fruit the first year?

It may flower, but remove the blossoms for the first 2 years so the plant can establish. Light crops start around year 3.

Can I grow just one blueberry in a pot?

Yes. A single Sunshine Blue in a large pot of acidic mix is one of the easiest ways to grow blueberries, especially in warm climates.

Which blueberry is best for Texas or Florida?

Sunshine Blue, a low-chill southern highbush. Northern types like Bluecrop and Chandler need more winter chill than most of the Deep South gets.

Bottom line

One blueberry bush will fruit, but two compatible varieties give you more and bigger berries. In zones 4 to 7, plant Bluecrop with Chandler; in warm zones or containers, start with Sunshine Blue. See all options in our blueberry buying guide or shop blueberry plants.
