Fig Trees
Figs are easier to grow than most people expect, and the variety you pick matters more than anything else. If you garden in zone 5 or 6, start with the Chicago Hardy fig tree. It fruits on new wood, so even after a hard winter knocks it back, it can regrow and ripen figs that same summer. In zone 6 or warmer, the Violette de Bordeaux fig tree is the other pick, shipped bare root in spring. Both are self fertile, so one tree is enough. Not sure where you stand? Common questions
Can I grow a fig tree in zone 5?
Yes, with Chicago Hardy, which is rated for zones 5 to 10. In zones 5 and 6 a hard winter can kill the top back, but because it fruits on new wood it can regrow and still fruit the same summer.
Do I need two fig trees to get fruit?
No. Chicago Hardy and Violette de Bordeaux are both self fertile, so a single tree can set figs on its own.
How do the fig trees ship?
Chicago Hardy ships as a live plant in a 1 gallon pot. Violette de Bordeaux ships bare root at 2 to 3 ft, and only in its spring shipping season. Chicago Hardy does not ship to CA, AZ, HI or AK.
