Quick answer
Buy Orient if you want smoother, less gritty pears for fresh eating and the strongest fire blight resistance. Buy Kieffer if you garden in a colder zone (it is rated down to zone 4), you want pears mainly for canning and preserves, or you want the lower price. For the biggest harvest, plant both: each one is only partly self-fertile, and they help pollinate each other.

Which pear tree should you buy?
Buy Orient if you want the best fresh-eating pear for the South
Orient was bred for Southern heat and humidity. Its large, round pears have smooth, mild flesh with very little grit, which makes it the better pick for eating fresh. It is highly resistant to fire blight, the bacterial disease that kills many pears in warm, humid areas, and it needs only about 300 to 400 chill hours. It also arrives as a larger tree, 4 to 5 ft bare root. Orient is listed for zones 5 to 8.
Buy Kieffer if you are in a cold zone, love canning, or want a lower price
Kieffer is the tough homestead pear, a European-Asian hybrid from the 1870s. It is rated for an unusually wide range, zones 4 to 9, and tolerates heat, humidity and soils that defeat fussier pears. The fruit is crisp and slightly gritty, so most growers use it for canning, preserves, baking and pear butter. It also ships earlier, December to March.
Plant both for the biggest harvest
Both pears are only partly self-fertile. One may crop alone in some regions, but harvests are heavier with another pear nearby, and Kieffer and Orient are listed as potential partners for each other. Check that their bloom overlaps in your area.
Is Kieffer or Orient better for Texas?
Both are low-chill pears that suit much of Texas. Texas A&M sources put Orient at about 350 chill hours. In San Antonio and South-Central Texas, where winters usually bring roughly 400 to 600 chill hours, both can work; Orient is at the warm edge of its listed range in zone 9a, while Kieffer is rated to zone 9. See our San Antonio fruit tree guide for the full list of what to plant.
How to harvest either pear
Pick both while the fruit is still firm, then ripen it indoors at room temperature. Pears left to ripen on the tree tend to turn gritty or soft at the core. Kieffer is picked hard and green-gold; Orient is picked when mature but still firm.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Kieffer or Orient pear?
Orient is better for fresh eating and fire blight resistance. Kieffer is better for the coldest zones, for canning and preserves, and for budget. Planting both gives the biggest harvest.
Do I need two pear trees?
Kieffer and Orient are partly self-fertile and may crop alone in some regions, but harvests are heavier with another pear nearby. They are potential pollination partners for each other.
Which pear tree is most resistant to fire blight?
Of these two, Orient. It is highly resistant to fire blight, though not immune. Kieffer may show some tolerance in certain regions but remains susceptible.
Are Kieffer pears gritty?
Kieffer has a coarse, slightly gritty texture, which is why it is mostly grown for canning and cooking. Orient has smoother flesh with very little grit.
How long until a pear tree produces fruit?
Kieffer often bears within 3 to 5 years, depending on rootstock and tree age. Orient ships as a larger 4 to 5 ft tree, which typically starts bearing sooner than a small whip.
